Album Advert

To give the band a more professional feel and look we decided to produce a advert for the single. I porduced this useing Photoshop. I used the image i had produced for the front of the album as the image in the center of the album. I then added diamonds around this and placed the text in suitable places. The idea behind the design was to make it look simple, fresh and easy to see. After looking at other advertisments i realised that bright colours are effective so i used a bright colour for the logo and used black writing to make it easy to read from a distance and to compliment the colour. Overall i am pleased with my design as i feel it works for its purpose and looks profesional.

DigiPack Layout

I designed the digi-pack for the single. This is what i came up with. I used a variety of colours to make it bright and colour full while at the same time used images which appear in the music video to place on the different faces, this was to allow the customer to relate the physical product with the visuals on the video. This has also helped the band look more professional and thought about. To make the digi-pack i used Adobe Photoshop with the acquired skills from my photography course to layer up the different parts and used several of the effects and layer masks to achieve the colours.

The logo has been used on the front cover and on the disc, when we looked at other cd singles and albums we noticed that often the design on the front of the case was often in some way represented on the actual disc. This helps the customer if they find the disc out of its case they can straight away realize with the easily memorable visuals that it belongs to this case.

This design is the flat image before folding. This would be folded in half then the two sides folded in.

Final Music Video

After adding all of the effects and editing we had to convert the final cut file to a movie file. This was simple which allowed us to upload it onto youtube. Bellow is the finished result of our music video.

I think the video is really interesting and i feel it follows most of the conventions of a pop video. I think that we have included many different shots at a fast pace which allows the viewer to follow the pace through the visuals as well as the rythem from the audio.

We have decided to write an in depth evaluation on our music video.

Rough Cut

We produced a rough cut to allow us to see what the finished product will look like. To produce this we quickly put together the clips which we were going to use and did some editing, after the rough cut was put toegther we were then able to change the smaller details and add more effects. I think our rough cut clearly shows the quality that the final video will look like and gives a feel for what will be produced.

To complete the video we still need to edit more of the green screen by adding in a variety of interesting and colourful backgrounds, in some cases we also need to add in more clips as currently a few shots last too long or are ourt of focus, this may need us to re-film parts. As this is only a rough cut and is only to get a rough idea of the finished product, it does not last the full lenghth of the song whereas the actuall finished video will.

To make the backgrounds I used photoshop to build up an image useing layers. This allowed each part of the image to be seperate and become movable when put into final cut. This was simple and easy to do once i worked out that it would work in final cut however as each shot had to be different I needed to create many backgrounds for each shot to make sure that the video was constantly changing and keeping the audience's attention.

Shooting Schedule

As our music video is based using the green screen we have had to try our best to fit our spare time in college with the time that the studio is able to be booked out. This has been hard as not all of us have the same free time, luckily wednesday afternoons none of us have any lessons or out of college commitments which meant this was going to be our main shooting day, and other days would be during media lessons or break/dinner.

Wednesday 20th
-
9.00-10.30-
During the time of our usual lesson period.
12.15-4.00-
Over dinner time and then from 1.05 onwards the use of our free time.

Friday 22nd
-
10.45-1.05- Shooting during lesson time and then from 12.15 over dinner.

After uploading and editing some of our video we realised that we needed more footage. We hired out the studio in the brinkburn college to allow us to shoot footage of the parts we had accidently missed out. The days we hired out are:

Thursday 11th November-
13.05 - 15.10
- This was during our lesson and into the next period as we all had free time which had realised when booking the studio. This allowed us to shoot most of the corus which we were missing.

Friday 12th November -

10.45 - 12.15 - The footage we captured was to be used in the missing parts of the video which we did not have any footage to fill. This time was during a media lesson period.

Risk Assessment

For health and safety reasons our group came up with a list of all the possible risks that maybe a danger to us whilst producing our music video. We also came up with some problems we may come across if all the items we need to film are not available. We came up with some ideas as to how we would deal with and treat the situation if it was to happen and also what we could do to avoid it.

Story Board

We drew our storyboard and put it together in the form of a 'Animatic' to make it easier to follow and give us a visual prototype of what the music video will look like. This is what we produced:

Goodwins Analysis

I created a SlideShare to upload my analysis to make it easier for viewing.

Logo Design

This is the logo which we designed. I was given the task to make this in Photoshop and animate it. The process consisted of firstly making each shape in photoshop on a lime green background, once these had been saved as separate jpeg images it was then possible to import them into final cut. we used the chroma keyer to remove the green background on the images which allowed the backgounds to become transperant giving a more professional look to the logo. We used motion paths to make the circles move and useing the text editor bundled with Final Cut we were able to create animated text to appear down the side of the logo.

Bellow is the final logo I produced:

Props

  • Disco ball
  • Record player
  • Mobile
  • Mega phone
  • Women's wig
  • Cardboard
  • Toy doll
  • Green card/ paper
  • Magnify glass
  • Animal mask
  • Fake money
  • American flag
  • String
  • Ghost
  • Taboo bottle
  • Fake spider
  • Glass bottle

TV - We planned to make this using a card board box. To make the shape I cut out the screen and used this left over piece to make two circles to act as buttons. These were then glued onto the box with a hot glue gun. I then made an arial also out of cardboard and glued this to the top of the box. One of our ideas was to film the TV 'floating' in the air, this was done by attaching the TV to a pole using string. Our ideas were to make it look surreal and funny,

MegaPhones - I came up with the idea of making them on photoshop and then putting them onto card to make a card board cut out to look humorous yet intentional. I created the megaphones in photoshop by tracing over a image of a real megaphone to leave just a black outline. I then filled in the center using a gradient fill. I printed these out several times all with different colours to make the video look colorful and to make each one slightly different.

Call Sheet

As our personal details (phone number & Email Addresses) were on the original call sheet for blogger purposes & privacy reasons i have pixelated these.

Costumes

We wanted to create costumes which were over the top flamboyant, and decorative. We took inspiration from other videos done by the Scissor Sisters and thought that our costumes need to be over the top and dramatic to help tie in with the fast paced song. I got some pink material covered in sparkly sequins and made a top with it, this consisted of an over the shoulder simple top with a mesh shoulder piece and one flared arm sleeve coming off it, down the side was a strip of the same mesh material to show the skin. I am pleased with this top however I feel we will still need several more outfits for our performance to add variation and originality.

Another idea which i thought would be good is to get an old vest top some polystyrene cones and a glue gun. I would then attach the cones onto the vest using the glue gun, this would be unrealistic and unusual which is the desired effect. This is inspired by Madonna.

Amy used a a pair of lycra leggings which had bright colours in them, this was to add a bright contrast to the backgrounds which we hoped would attract attention and make the shots look more interesting for the viewer. I feel we did achieve this.

Another top i made was this multicolored jacket. This was done by using a flag and sewing it together. we wanted The costumes to be bright and colorful therefore i thought this idea fit the ideas and would become useful. I think the jacket is vibrant against the white background and attracts the viewer into the video.

Sam had been in shows before and she remembered about this top she had. It was brightly colored with neon orange, yellow and green feathers on. This fit with the other costumes due to the bright colours and therefore was a good idea for use to use this in the video.

We wanted to create a casual look to some parts of the video to create a good contrast and variation. After looking at the video ' David Guetta - Gettin' Over You' we realised that leather jackets were often used in music videos. We used our leather jackets in our videos to replicate this in between clips of us in the bright coloured shots.

Mind Map of Ideas

The group sat and thought of various ideas which we thought would work well with the song choice. This is what we came up with:

Selected Music Video

As a group we decided to use the Scissor Sisters song 'Night Life', this song doesn't currently have a video produced by the group therefore we realised that it would be easier to come up with fresh new ideas without being influenced and tempted to replicate there own version. There previous videos include allot of bold colour, and over the top costumes which we thought would be good to twist and make our own ideas up using there previous videos for inspiration.

The music is fast paced and of the pop genre which means the video can be exciting and will contain different;

  • camera angles/shots
  • costumes
  • lighting
  • colours
  • dance routines
  • makeup
  • locations

This will give us allot to work with and allow us to come up with interesting original ideas.

Bellow is the track and lyrics:

I was a young girl
Knew next to nothing
Living in the suburbs
And my heart was lusting
For a new way
And a new sound
Crawled over my hang-ups
To the underground

I had a breakthrough
I had to shake you
You couldn't come to
To see my point of view
I had a breakthrough
It was my debut
It didn't faze you
But it meant something to me

Night Life
Beneath the surface
Night Life
Some say it's worthless
Night life
It's a state of being
Inside
It's the song you're singing
Night Life
If there's no spirit
Night Life
Then don't go near it
Night Life
It's a high turnover
Inside
You can find your life in the night life

If you are feeling
Like you don't have nothing
Under pressure in a cooker
With your head in the oven
There's a new way
So come on down
Life in limbo will be over
When you're underground

You need a breakthrough
You need to make due
You need to come to
A brand new point of view
You need to break through
And then get wise to
All that is taboo
And you'll be something to see

Night Life
Beneath the surface
Night Life
Some say it's worthless
High Life
It's a state of being
Inside
It's the song you're singing
Night Life
It's the heart you're racing
Night Life
It's the pill you're tasting
Night Life
It's the cash you're making
Inside
You can find your life in the nightlife

Beneath the surface
Some say it's worthless
It's a low-cut ceiling
It's the rush you're feeling
It can break your spirit
If you let them near it
It's the back you're breaking
Are you in it for the Nightlife?

Find your way to hide in the nightlife
You can find your life in the nightlife
